Clinical research and personal data protection
The MultiMedica IRCCS Hospital in Sesto San Giovanni, active since 1996, is recognized by the Italian Ministry of Health as a Scientific Institute for Research, Hospitalization and Healthcare (IRCCS) specializing in cardiovascular diseases. Within the hospital, there is full integration between the different specialist areas dedicated to safeguarding heart and cardiovascular health: laboratory research, clinical research, prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and training.
The hospital ensures the availability of all specialties and clinical pathways for patients with cardiovascular diseases, offering a complete continuum of care – from advanced cardiovascular diagnostics to cardiac surgery and cardiac rehabilitation, including outpatient services.
As an IRCCS focused on cardiovascular diseases, MultiMedica, thanks to its structured network of laboratories and therapeutic areas, is able to effectively conduct translational research that integrates experimental research with clinical practice, with the aim of transferring laboratory results to the patient’s bedside. On the clinical side, MultiMedica is organized according to an inter-hospital departmental model, ensuring a comprehensive care pathway for cardiovascular patients, from the first specialist visit through to rehabilitation.
In terms of research, IRCCS MultiMedica operates laboratories within an area of approximately 10,000 square meters located at the Scientific and Technological Campus in southern Milan.
The cardiovascular sector, for which IRCCS MultiMedica is recognized, encompasses the following major disease areas:
-
All cardiac and vascular diseases and their complications, from their origin, including the risk factors that contribute to their onset, such as endocrine-metabolic disorders, diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidemia.
-
Respiratory diseases, particularly chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD).
-
Renal diseases strongly associated with heart failure, which may progress to chronic kidney disease and ultimately require dialysis treatment.
A retrospective observational clinical study is defined as a “study conducted on the basis of documentation collected in the past and therefore already existing before the decision to initiate the study.”
This section provides information regarding the processing of personal data for scientific research purposes in the medical, biomedical, or epidemiological fields, as well as Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs) carried out pursuant to Article 35 of the GDPR for each study.
Personal Data Protection and Retrospective Observational Research
Retrospective observational research projects are conducted through the analysis of patients’ personal data while safeguarding their fundamental rights and freedoms.
Pseudonymization, in particular, represents an important technical security measure that prevents the direct identification of patients by assigning each of them a unique alphanumeric code. This procedure is reversible. Only duly authorized personnel may access personal data and the coding key that allows re-identification.
Single-Center Retrospective Study “Prognostic value of the reduction trend of LSM compared to the absolute value detected post-SVR (sustained virological response) in advanced chronic liver disease related to HCV (ACLD).”
Retrospective Study “Comparison of three different grading systems in pleural mesothelioma with clinical implications (ITEMS, Italian neTwork on plEural Mesothelioma Study)”
